Jackass is an American reality comedy TV series created by Jeff Tremaine, Spike Jonze, and Johnny Knoxville. The series originally aired on MTV in three short seasons from October 2000 to August 2001, with reruns extending into 2002.
What is Jackass ?
The show is known for featuring a cast of nine friends who performed various stunts and pranks on each other and the public. The main cast members included Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Chris Pontius, Ryan Dunn, Steve-O, Dave England, Ehren McGhehey, Jason “Wee Man” Acuña, and Preston Lacy.
After MTV ceased broadcasting Jackass in 2002, the series evolved into a widespread media franchise. This expansion includes the spin-offs Wildboyz and Viva La Bam, as well as five feature films released by Paramount Pictures, four of which are expanded compilation films. The franchise also boasts a video game, a mobile game, boxed DVD sets featuring unreleased footage from the original TV show, a short-lived website with blogs and videos, extensive merchandise, and several additional videos released through various other channels.
Jackass stirred controversy due to its perceived indecency and the potential for encouraging dangerous behavior. Despite this, the show earned a spot at 68th on Entertainment Weekly’s “New TV Classics” list and remains a significant element of 2000s American popular culture.
What is Johnny Knoxville talking about Jackass 5?
Jackass franchise creator and star Johnny Knoxville has revealed that he’s still generating ideas for a potential fifth film. In discussing the tremendous success of Jackass Forever and the possibility of a sequel, Knoxville noted that he remains actively involved in brainstorming concepts for future installments. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Knoxville likened the Jackass experience to a persistent urge, highlighting that the right conditions must align for the team to fully commit. Meanwhile, he continues to develop and write potential stunts.
Knoxville shared, “Jackass is like a sensation that drives you to create another project. I don’t have that urge at the moment, but I still jot down Jackass ideas regularly because I can’t resist. Whenever I come up with a new idea, I write it down and email it to myself. I keep writing just in case, though I’m not sure if there will be enough material.”
Steve-O Doesn’t Want to see Johnny Knoxville Get Hurt Again
Fellow Jackass star Steve-O has also expressed hesitancy about returning to the franchise anytime soon, citing the emotional impact of Johnny Knoxville’s injuries during Jackass Forever. In an interview with NME, Steve-O shared how witnessing Knoxville suffer repeated head trauma over the years, especially given their advancing age, has lessened the enjoyment of making the movies.
Steve-O reflected, “This last Jackass movie… it was kind of a downer, man. It’s no longer enjoyable to see Knoxville getting hit in the head. I sent a heartfelt text to the entire cast that day, expressing my gratitude to Knoxville for his sacrifices and urging him to avoid further brain trauma. It was one of my more serious and sincere messages.
In a 2023 interview, Johnny Knoxville shared a harrowing experience involving a severe face fracture that caused his eye to literally pop out. Knoxville told Vanity Fair, “My concussions are probably my most serious injuries. I once suffered a blowout fracture of my left eye where it actually popped out and had to be repositioned. This happened a couple of times, once in the bathroom and another while walking around with Pontius. After the blowout fracture, I was advised not to sneeze for about six weeks, but I have allergies. Despite the warning, while walking with Pontius, he made a funny comment and, for some reason, I pinched my nose.
Johnny Knoxville’s latest update on the potential for Jackass 5 offers a tantalizing glimpse into the future of the beloved franchise. Despite not currently feeling the pressing urge to dive into another installment, Knoxville’s ongoing commitment to brainstorming new ideas and stunts shows that the creative spark behind Jackass remains strong. Fans can take heart in knowing that Knoxville continues to explore possibilities, even as he balances the challenges and risks associated with the franchise.
